Fight Camp Week 3- Cash vs Welborn
The penultimate week of Fight Camp is headlined by undefeated Middleweight Felix Cash who faces Jason Welborn.
Cash boasts an impressive record of 12 wins with 8 KOs which has seen him claim the Middleweight Commonwealth title. Cash sees this bout as a perfect steppingstone in his career.
The Commonwealth champion faces a tough opponent in Welborn and the big stage of Fight Camp will provide the perfect setting for him to put on a show and place himself in the picture for big domestic and international fights. Cash, whose, career has been off and on needs to put on a performance in order to build some momentum.
Cash is confident in his abilities and believes that he more than enough for Welborn and will look to move on in his career. “He comes to fight and he’s strong. He’s a tough man and he’s been in with some top operators. I won’t take anything away from him, but he’s also been beaten by those top operators.
“Every time he gets into the ring with a top operator, he seems to come up short, and I believe I am a top operator. He will make it tough for a few rounds, but I’ll get him in the end.”
This will be an intriguing fight as it will be a true test for Cash and will show whether he should be in the conversation for the big fights. This will be a fight of Cash’s class and boxing ability against the toughness of Welborn. It will truly show whether the hype and plaudits that have been placed upon Cash were warranted.
Rest of the Card:
Just like any Matchroom Boxing card the undercard boasts good and testing fights.
The chief support is the impressive Zelfa Barrett. Barrett is making his Matchroom debut after joining from Queensbury Promotions.
‘Brown Flash’ was due to make his debut for Matchroom on the sell-out Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin card but that was cancelled due to Covid-19. He will instead now make his debut behind closed doors at Fight Camp.
“I’m very excited because all eyes are on the fighter,” said Barrett. “There’s no crowd, so everyone will be turning in to watch it on TV. The viewing figures are going to be huge. A fighter will fight anywhere. A true fighter will fight anywhere. People say ‘some fighters need crowds’ or whatever but to me it’s all rubbish.
“When you put those little gloves on and you put your shorts on; you’re in a fight. No matter what anyone else says, you’re in a fight. You get that same feeling with one person watching or 50,000 people watching. Those fans can’t help you when you’re in the ring.” He said to Matchroom’s website.
Barrett has impressed throughout his career, winning 14 of 23 wins by KO and he only has one loss on his record.
In his much-anticipated Matchroom debut, Barrett will face the undefeated Eric Donavon for the IBF Intercontinental Super Featherweight Title.
Third on the bill is Shannon Courtenay who faces off against Rachel Ball. Courtenay has impressed in her five fights with 2 KOs. Courtenay looked good in her last fight when she scored a walk-off knockout victory.
Courtenay will look to continue the momentum that she built up in her career. But she faces a stiff competition in Rachel Ball.
Ball told Matchroomboxing.com that she will give Courtenay and her fans the ‘shock of their lives’ on Friday August 14.
“They’re going to see a tall skinny ginger girl from Walsall coming in and smashing it up in Eddie’s back garden. I can’t wait and I think everyone is going to enjoy it. It’s going to be a brilliant fight.
“People say keep it long and I’m sure I will, but if it comes down to it, I don’t mind having a good tear up. I’d love that. That’s not a problem. How will she cope with someone who throws back at her? How will she cope with the pressure?” Ball said.
This will be the toughest fight in the short professional career of Courtenay, but she believes that this is a necessary fight in order for her to correct.
This will very much be a learning fight for the ‘Baby Face Assassin’ but one that she is confident in coming out on top.
Just before Courtenay vs Ball, John Docherty faces off against Anthony Fox. Docherty has a perfect record of 8 wins with 6 KOs.
He faces off against Fox who has 8 wins but has 12 loses on his record. Docherty has noted that he needs to win this fight in style and make a statement with his performance. “I’ve taken Anthony Fox seriously. He’s like a British Champion to me. I’ve left everything in the gym. I know I’ve done everything right in this camp. Tony has been there pushing me on the whole way through. You’ll see on the night. I’ll be a completely different fighter. I’ll put on a top performance.” Docherty said.
Opening the card is Kieron Conway vs Nav Mansouri. Both have impressive records with Conway winning 14 out of 15, with Mansouri winning 20 out 25.
Conway showed his class when he fought Ted Cheeseman and narrowly lost a decision. A fight which showed his heart and boxing ability, a fight that many thought Conway edged.
This is a cracking opening fight and will see the victor take home the WBA Intercontinental Super-Welterweight Championship.
Week three of fight camp is stacked top to bottom and promises to deliver a night of great fights.
