England surge towards crucial win in decisive Test- England vs West Indies, Test 3, Day 3
The West Indies began the day six down and attacked the England bowlers from the first delivery. The first half an hour of the morning session belonged to the visitors.
West Indian captain Jason Holder was key in the West Indian assault on England bowlers Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes.
Jason Holder was eventually out lbw after the early onslaught. Broad hit the pads of the West Indian captain and he was given out. He reviewed the decision, but it was upheld. Holder departed for 46, the fall of his wicket marked a West Indian batting collapse.
Cornwall fell soon after too Broad once again. Broad hit Cornwall’s pads with the West Indian being given out for 10. Much like his captain holder the decision was reviewed but upheld with the West indies losing their second review.
Broad claimed his fifth wicket of the innings as Roach was caught behind. Broad’s spell took the game away from the West Indies and placed it in firm control of England. His haul takes him close to 500 Test wickets.
The West Indies lost their final wicket soon after with Dowrich hitting the ball high with Woakes taking the catch. Broad had six wickets in the innings and rattled the West Indies out.
The West Indies were all out for 197 and trailed England by 184.
England began their second innings of Test with a sizeable lead. Sibley and Burns in their normal fashion. Both played within themselves and slowly saw off the new ball.
The pair reached tea 86-0 and began to build England’s lead. They finally reached a hundred partnership with both successfully reached their half centuries.
The West Indies thought they had got the breakthrough that they desperately needed. Holder hit Sibley’s pads and was given not out. It was reviewed by the West Indies captain, but the decision was upheld.
Sibley was then hit on the pads again and this time given out. The opener reviewed and once again the decision was upheld. The Warwickshire man departed for 56.
England Captain Joe Root came to the crease and put together another 100 partnership with opener Rory Burns.
They began to accelerate the run rate and vastly increase England’s lead. Root successfully got to his half century and began find the boundary on a regular occasion towards the end of his innings.
Burns looked to get his century but was caught out for 90. England declared on 226-2 with a lead 399.
The West Indies were then put into to bat for the remaining overs of the day. England got an early wicket that they would’ve wanted in the closing overs of the day.
Broad found the outside edge of Campbell which nestled in the midriff of Joe Root. Campbell was out for a duck.
Broad struck again soon after. Night watchmen Kemar Roach edged a delivery from the Nottinghamshire man which was caught by Buttler. Broad had put the West Indies under a massive amount of pressure.
The West Indies pair survived the remaining couple of overs and finished the day on 10-2.
The day and the Test very much belongs to Stuart Broad. His 62 runs yesterday boosted England’s total and then today took the last 4 wickets to get rid of the remaining West Indian batsman. Broad finished the day of by taking the two wickets that fell in the visitors second innings. Broad finished the day on 499 Test wickets.
England will look to take advantage this great position. They need only 8 wickets to win the Test and series. The balance of the match is very much in England’s favour.
At this point in the game the West Indies will need to bat out two days and will need to pull out an amazing performance in order to rescue this match.
