Lampard sacked as Chelsea Manager

Lampard sacked as Chelsea Manager

Chelsea have parted ways with manager Frank Lampard after eighteen months in charge, with former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint German manager Thomas Tuchel in line to replace him.

Lampard returned to Chelsea after a short managerial stint at Championship side Derby. The 42-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge whilst the club were under a transfer ban but still managed to successfully qualify for the Champions League whilst exhibiting the club’s young talent.

Once the transfer ban was lifted, Lampard was given sizeable transfer funds by owner Roman Abramovich to improve the squad. Lampard brought in Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen for £71 million, Ben Chillwell for £50 millon and also brought in Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, Hakim Zayech from Ajax, Thiago Silva on a free transfer and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

The signings brought in by Chelsea have not met expectations and as a result Chelsea’s form has dipped, with only two wins coming in Chelsea’s last eight games in the Premier League which has left them ninth in the Premier League.

The spending in excess of £200 million and the poor league position and form, the club took the decision the relieve the Chelsea legend of his role as manager of the club.

"This has been a very difficult decision, and not one that the owner and the board have taken lightly.

"We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as head coach of the club. However, recent results and performances have not met the club's expectations, leaving the club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement.

"There can never be a good time to part ways with a club legend such as Frank, but after lengthy deliberation and consideration it was decided a change is needed now to give the club time to improve performances and results this season." The club said in a statement.

Lampard appeared in 648 games for the Blues and scored 211 times on his way to eleven trophies at the club but was unable to replicate any sort of success during his short managerial stint.

The 42-year-old said he was "disappointed not to have had the time to take the club forward" but added "huge privilege and an honour" to be able to manage the club.

"When I took on this role I understood the challenges that lay ahead in a difficult time for the football club," he added in a statement released on Monday night.

"I am proud of the achievements that we made, and I am proud of the academy players that have made their step into the first team and performed so well. They are the future of the club." He concluded.

The massive amount of money spent in the transfer market, the poor form and the low league position spelled the end for Lampard’s spell at Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel will reportedly be announced as the new manager in the coming days.
