Liverpool Clinch First Premier League Title
Liverpool have won their first English League title in 30 years. Their 30-year drought has ended and have clinched their first English League title since the 1990-1 season.
Jurgen Klopp’s team clinched the title after Chelsea beat Man City 2-1 on Thursday evening, the full-time whistle signalled the start of celebrations for Liverpool fans.
Liverpool have been the dominant team this season, winning the league with 7 games to go. Their performance over the course of the interrupted season has drawn plaudits from across pundits and rival managers and players. With the most notable praise coming from Man City’s manager, Pep Guardiola who said that Liverpool have had an ‘extraordinary’ season.
This is Liverpool’s fourth trophy in eighteen months, and after this most recent success, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp believes that ‘everything possible for this side’ as long as they stay ‘humble’.
The former Dortmund manager said that it meant ‘everything’ to him to win Liverpool’s first Premier League title and nineteenth League title.
"As long as we stay humble and we're still ready to write stories we want to tell our grandchildren, everything is possible for us," the German added.
In an interview with the BBC, Klopp detailed his journey from his first day at the club to the clinching of the title. “When I came in, I had to tell them not to compare themselves with anyone anymore, some of the fantastic people who played for this club and won everything in the past.
"We needed to get the opportunity from our supporters to find our own way, and this is only possible because people never lost patience with us in any moment."
The thirty-year drought would have been unimaginable after the domestic dominance that Liverpool had throughout the 1980s and after Kenny Dalglish’s side lifted the trophy in 1991.
Due to this momentous achievement, the German manager has drawn comparisons to the great Liverpool managers of years gone by such as Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly and Sir Kenny Dalglish. But Klopp has distanced himself from these comparisons, stating that "I don't see it that way. It's not too important. But if people want to see it like this, I'm not the guy to tell them to stop doing that… but they are really icons. What Bill and Bob did is just incredible and in very difficult times - people had nothing and they lifted and built this city. Kenny was player-manager - it's unbelievable, I don't think there is any story that can compare with that, just incredible.”
This is an achievement that would not have been possible without a cohesive team, that worked as a selfless unit.
When Klopp first joined the club 8 October 2015, the charismatic German stated that they must turn ‘doubters into believers’. He has certainly done that; he has turned the team around with shrewd acquisitions and the installation of an unwavering philosophy.
After securing the title, Liverpool now have a chance to make Premier League history and set the record points tally. But this is a momentous moment in Liverpool’s history, with the club having the chance to create a dynasty of constant success.
